Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) college students nearing graduation and preparing to pursue a career in their chosen fields are increasingly looking for employers who are LGBT-inclusive.
The Human Rights Campaign annually compiles and updates its Corporate Equality Index (CEI): a list of companies meeting criteria identifying them as LGBT-inclusive. HRC periodically increases the challenge for companies to earn a 100% CEI rating.
Corporations are evaluated for LGBT-inclusiveness in categories including:
- Non-discrimination policy and diversity training regarding sexual orientation
- Non-discrimination policy, diversity training, and benefits regarding gender identity or gender expression
- Same-sex domestic partner and transgender-inclusive benefits
- LGBT employee resource group
- Corporate diversity council
- Engagement with and behavior toward the external LGBT community
Great progress has been made on making the workplaces more LGBT-friendly in recent years, as companies increasingly compete for new talent. The number of companies reaching the 100% level has steadily increased over time, even as HRC continues to increase the requirements to achieve such a rating.
A significant number of these companies are of particular interest to graduates in the science, engineering, and technology fields. Listed below are companies in the science, engineering, and technology areas, identified by NOGLSTP as scoring 100% on the HRC 2013 CEI from the numerous business segments employing talented science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) professionals.
